I don’t know why I didn’t try this before (yes, I do. I’m an idiot), but I just saved 25 pages as a pdf. Word screamed in frustration, because it couldn’t change a thing. Lots of agents let you attach pdfs, as well as Word docs. Word is not well, it’s sick, but that’s beside the point. So, as long as no agent asks me to send the whole thing, I’m safe, and alas, shall remain so until I learn to write a much spiffier query.

There are ways to copy text FROM PDFs to Word, using the paste as plain text method, for when you’re ready to go the “other” way.
